Riots broke out all throughout India when the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya was demolished on December 6, 1992. Although communal unrest has always been a possibility in Mumbai, the unrest in December 1992 and then again in January 1993 was unprecedented. A series of explosions struck the city two months later in March, killing over 250 people and wounding 700 others. Community conflict was followed by gang battles and natural disasters, all of which permanently altered the city. The book Bombay after Ayodhya describes how Mumbai has seen tremendous change over the previous three decades. After the riots, there was a split in the Mumbai underworld, which shifted the political equations and caused the emergence of new townships.?
