On July 18, 2012, at about 7 o'clock in the evening, a fire started at the Maruti Suzuki India manufacturing facility in Manesar. A manager lost his life as a result. Within a few days, the corporation fired almost 2,000 temporary workers and 546 permanent employees. Thirteen of them, including the entire leadership of the workers' union, were subsequently charged with murder, putting an end to yet another independent body for collective bargaining.
