People travel from all over only to forget. The sadness and traumatic memories of people can really be erased at the Memory House in Tumble Tree, Texas, according to Lucy's father. Lucy is eager to pick up the family trade and ease the suffering of others, and now that she is sixteen, she can. But nothing is exactly what it seems. When Lucy tests her dad's memory on him, his memory is resistant, and in the portion Lucy sees, there is a glimpse of Mama on the day of her death, her face coloured red with remorse. The following morning, Lucy awakens with an injured knee, a pocket full of sand, and no recollection of what just happened. She is forced to listen to Marco Warman, a local lad she's always been curious about and who seems to have a lot to say.
