Mariana Mazzucato and Rosie Collington demonstrate how our economies' reliance on firms like McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, Bain & Company, PwC, Deloitte, KPMG, and EY hinders innovation, obscures political and corporate accountability, and undermines our shared goal of preventing climate breakdown. The confidence ruse used by the consulting sector in agreements with risk-averse and hollowed-out governments and shareholder value-maximizing businesses is known as the "Big Con." As a result of reforms implemented by both the Third Way progressives and the neoliberal right in the 1980s and 1990s, it flourished and now thrives on the flaws of contemporary capitalism, from financialization and privatisation to the climate crisis. It is made feasible by the special authority that large consultancies hold through their wide networks and contracts as advisors, legitimizers, and outsourcers, as well as the false impression that they are reliable sources of knowledge and ability. To make problems worse, many of our best and brightest graduates are switched from consultancy to public service. The Great Con hurts our businesses and infantilizes our governments in all of these ways. The idea that consultants always contribute value to the economy is skillfully destroyed by Mazzucato and Collington. They persuasively argue for investment and collective intelligence within all organisations and communities, as well as for a new system in which the public and private sectors collaborate creatively for the sake of all, supported by a plethora of unique research. The role of consultants needs to be reevaluated as we rebuild purpose-fit economies and governments.
