Dosebai Cowasjee Jessawalla (1832?1911), the granddaughter of Seth Cursetjee Manekjee Shroff, the renowned benefactor whose statue in Byculla Mumbaikers affectionately refer to as "Khada Parsi," was one of the first Indian ladies to gain from an English education. Meheribai, her mother, made a choice that drew censure from the Parsi community and ridicule from the media. Dosebai, though, was empowered in ways that were unthinkable for most women at the time, and its life-changing effects became apparent in just a few years?and persisted for a lifetime. She demonstrated her courage and independence through her lifestyle and decisions.
