This book was written by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru during his imprisonment in Ahmednagar Fort during 1942-1945 before the independence of India. In this, Nehru ji has scientifically analyzed the diverse rich culture, religion and past of India, which developed from the Indus Valley Civilization to the independence of India. He tried to establish harmony in different views towards the history of India and presented himself as an ideal of harmony. Jawaharlal Nehru ji himself writes about this book that history is the story of man's struggle; against wild animals and forests and against some of his own people, who tried to suppress him and exploit him for their benefit.
