Two Bengalis reached the 'third pole' of the world, Mount Everest, on May 17, 2010. The conquest of Everest began with the summit of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on May 29, 1953, and since then, nearly four thousand people have climbed Mount Everest. Yet, the achievements of these two mountaineers, Basanta Singh Roy and Debashis Biswas, will remain unique. This is the first time that Everest has been successfully climbed from West Bengal through a completely private and non-governmental initiative.
