Returning to Ford County, the imagined location of several of John Grisham's famous tales, is Homecoming. Although Jake Brigance is back, the courtroom is not where he is. He is asked to assist Mack Stafford, an old acquaintance who used to practise law in Clanton and who three years ago made headlines when he filed for bankruptcy, filed for divorce from his wife, and abruptly left his family in the middle of the night, never to be seen or heard from again.
