The aviator is abandoned with only enough food to last him a week and is utterly alone with no sign of any nearby habitation. He passes out on the sand from exhaustion and is awakened by a strange small voice. When he opens his eyes, a charming young boy with golden hair and a sweet laugh appears and requests that he draw a sheep. The young prince, who says he is from another planet and is visiting Earth, thus begins their voyage. The little prince shares with the aviator how he lives on a tiny asteroid and asks him questions about planet earth. Thus starts an engaging fable that takes the reader through a series of emotions and questions, covering loneliness, friendship, values, love, and loss. Through this fable, Saint-Exup?ry touches upon the willingness of children to be open-minded and explore the world around them and within themselves.
