A sizable caterpillar was smoking a pipe just here, on top of the mushroom. The Caterpillar eventually took the pipe out of its mouth and asked Alice, "Who are you?" in a drowsy, sluggish voice. What odd things occur when Alice enters Wonderland through the rabbit hole! She converses with the Cheshire Cat and the Caterpillar, attends the tea party of the Mad Hatter, and plays croquet with the King and Queen of Hearts.
