This book is an anthology of essays that are concerned with the intersection of science and society, particularly in the context of colonialism. It starts off by analysing the advantages and disadvantages of our inherited culture before moving on to the changes colonialism brought about and how our civilization dealt with them. This book, which is divided into four sections and is based mostly on original data, considers contestations, adaptations, compromises, and hybridity without neglecting the colonial system as a whole. The position and importance of indigenous (non-Western) knowledge are closely related to the strength or success of colonial or metropolitan knowledge. Should the indigenous just be understood in a metaphysical sense, or can they also be seen as historical and social reality?
