Light is once more compelled to give the Death Note to someone else in order to divert attention from himself as a result of Near openly suspecting the new L of being Kira and seeding doubt in the task force members' minds. However, Kira selects a disciple this time from among his devout followers. Light is unable to speak with Kira's successor directly, so he must trust on her commitment to her objectives.
