The Kargil insurgency was still seen as a normal event in May 1999. Nobody really grasped the gravity of the situation. But it soon became clear that infiltrators had taken control of high-altitude locations that Indian soldiers had abandoned during the winter, giving them a tactical advantage as the Indian Army battled with information. Capt. Anuj Nayyar and the members of 17 Jat conducted a number of reconnaissance missions in the boulder-strewn Drass area, where the enemy had established a base, over the course of the following month or so. The peak that was essential to the success of Operation Vijay and India's triumph in Kargil was secured after two nights of ferocious fighting in July. Amid heavy artillery and mortar fire, they destroyed four enemy bunkers and neutralized tens of infiltrators in close combat. During the attack on the fourth bunker, the twenty-three-year-old captain was hit by an enemy rocket-propelled grenade, dying instantly but saving the lives of fifteen men in the process, who eventually finished the mission and hoisted the Indian flag on the peak. For motivating his command by personal example and going beyond the call of duty, Capt. Anuj Nayyar was awarded India's second-highest gallantry award, the Maha Vir Chakra, in 2000. This is the Hindi translation of his story, which was a bestseller in English.
