Physical education, commonly referred to as Phys Ed., PE, Gym, or Gym class, and known as physical training or PT in several Commonwealth nations, is a subject in which students learn about maintaining their bodies through physical activity (i.e. calisthenics). In order to enhance health, it is taught in elementary and secondary schools and emphasises psychomotor learning in a play or movement exploration setting. In Singapore, students in primary school through junior college are expected to participate in two hours of physical education each week, with the exception of when there are exams. During most sessions, students get the opportunity to play sports like basketball, badminton, captain's ball, and football. There are sporadic games of unconventional sports like skateboarding and fencing. Sports include golf, tennis, shooting, and junior colleges' more elite secondary schools and squash are played. A compulsory fitness exam, NAPFA, is conducted in every school once every year to assess the physical fitness of the pupils. Pupils are given a series of fitness tests (Pull-ups/Inclined pull-ups for girls, standing broad jump, sit-ups, sit-and-reach and 1.6 km for primary [10- to 12-year-olds]/2.4 km for secondary and junior college levels [13- to 18-year-olds]). Students are graded by gold, silver, bronze or as fail. NAPFA for pre-enlistees serves as an indicator for an additional 2 months in the country?s compulsory national service if they attain bronze or fail.
