Charlie Gordon, who has an IQ of 68, is a floor sweeper and the target of everyone's jokes until he becomes a genius as a result of an experiment to increase human intelligence. Charlie must then accept the notion that his deliverance was just momentary as Algernon, the mouse whose triumphant experimental metamorphosis came before his, fades and passes away.
