The Goods and Services Tax (GST) went into effect on July 1, 2017. The largest tax reform since India gained independence, according to the administration, will usher in a new era of freedom and unification under the slogan "One Nation, One Tax." The administration asserted, among other things, that the GST would make it easier to conduct business, enhance tax collection, reduce inflation, boost GDP growth by 1-2%, and reduce the black economy. We still have more questions than answers more than a year later. What caused the economy to weaken? Is it likely that the government will raise tax revenue? Why have prices risen so steadily? Why did Malaysia remove GST? It appears that GST issues are both structural and transitory. For this, there have been adjustments made for these there have been a few hundred notifications and orders from the government which have added to the confusion. In this book, well-known economist Arun Kumar explains the reality behind GST. Known for not pulling any punches, the author explains why GST is a double-edged sword for the common man, why it will increase inequality across sectors and regions, why it will hurt small businesses-everything the government does not want you to know.
