The nazm is a powerful poetry form with a fascinating history, and it has a wide variety of very nuanced variants, voices, variations, and vicissitudes. This collection, which was assembled in its entirety for the first time, showcases the greatest Urdu nazms from the sixteenth century up to the present. The 140 nazms in the book, chosen, edited, and translated by Anisur Rahman, chart the development of the genre from its origins in the Deccan through the many regions of South Asia where it flourished and attained its multiplicity. Reading the beautiful English translations that were published alongside their transliterated originals was enjoyable and educational.
