Today, becoming a doctor is a highly desired career path for Indian women, but how did we get here? Early female doctors in the nineteenth century disobeyed Hindu orthodoxy, travelled across oceans, avoided child marriage, divorced their husbands, and became known as "lady doctors." Given that the majority of women were in purdah, their actions are all the more incredible. Our textbooks and memories have largely forgotten their captivating stories. To ensure that they are not forgotten, this book unearths their stories and makes them available to everyone. Anandibai Joshi, Rukhmabai Raut, Kadambini Ganguly, Haimabati Sen, and Muthulakshmi Reddy, a woman from Chennai who would later build the Adyar Cancer Hospital, are among the ladies included in the book.
