Fanny Price, who was raised in Sir Thomas Bertram's household after being adopted, grows up feeling like an outcast among her cousins amid the unusual elegance of Mansfield Park. Mary Crawford and her brother Henry arrive at Mansfield shortly after Sir Thomas departs on estate business in Antigua (the family's investment in slavery and sugar is considered in the Introduction in a new, post-colonial light). They bring with them London glamour and the seductive taste for flirting and theatre that causes a crisis. In some respects, Mansfield Park seems to carry Pride and Prejudice's story forward, but as Kathryn Sutherland demonstrates in her insightful Introduction, it is a far darker novel that questions "the very virtues (of tradition, stability, retirement, and devotion) it appears to promote."
