The poor, low-caste Namashudra community resided more than 200 years ago in the village of Orakandi in the Faridpur district of East Bengal, a neglected, isolated, and waterlogged area of the country. This village was devoid of contemporary education and anything else that defines a civilised life. One such person, Guru Chand Thakur, the son of Harichand Thakur, was born; he was an enlightened thinker. In the same vein as his father, he made an effort to mobilise, awaken, and elevate the Namashudra people, whom the Hindus did not deem deserving of the worship of their gods. They tell their narrative in Matua Ek Mukti Senar Naam. It tells the tale of a movement and new religion known as "Matua," which gave the Namashudras a philosophy and a foundational belief.
