Most histories of India's freedom fight are viewed from the standpoint of the nonviolent movement. The tale of military resistance to colonial occupation, however, is as significant. Many people still have strong memories of people with names like Vinayak Savarkar, Aurobindo Ghosh, Rashbehari Bose, Bagha Jatin, Sachindra Nath Sanyal, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, and Subhas Chandra Bose. Their tale is typically told as a series of isolated acts of bravery rather than as a component of a larger movement with a grand strategy or a substantial influence on the entire war for independence. In actuality, the revolutionaries were a part of a huge organisation that maintained violent opposition to the British Empire for fifty years. They not only developed nodes in a vast network within India but also Britain, France, Thailand, Germany, Persia, Russia, Italy, Ireland, the United States, Japan and Singapore. At various points, they received official support and recognition from the governments of some of these countries. Even the internal dynamics of the Indian National Congress of the time cannot be understood without the revolutionaries, who enjoyed widespread support within the organization. This was no small-scale movement of naive individual heroism but one that involved a large number of extraordinary young men and women who were connected in multiple ways to each other and to the evolving events of their times.
