Akka Mahadevi is one of India's most important feminist and spiritual icons. Her powerful vachanas, written in twelfth-century Karnataka, chart a revolutionary journey. Unlike other female bhaktas, Mahadevi worked within the female body rather than around it, eventually walking naked, 'breast to breast with the cosmos,' transcending all binaries, including male-female and devotee-God.
