The Castle tells the tale of K., a Land Surveyor who is not welcome in the hamlet or at the Castle and who is unable to return home. K.'s struggles in the strange, perplexing universe in which he finds himself seem to disclose some illogical truth about the essence of existence when he runs into dualities of confidence and uncertainty, optimism and dread, and reason and nonsense. The final of Kafka's three major novels, The Castle, which he started in 1922 but never finished, delivers intriguing conclusions that give it a curiously complete feeling.
