Savitri married the thirteen-year-old Jyotirao Phule when she was nine years old. Savitri longed to be able to read books and attend school. Jyotiba educated his wife because he wanted her to be well-informed. She quickly acquired not just reading and writing skills but also teacher training. Savitribai and Jyotirao Phule founded schools together so that girls, boys, Dalit children, and others who had previously been excluded from schools might receive an education.
