In the book The Last Heroes, these foot soldiers of Indian independence tell us their stories. They come from diverse walks of life, including atheists and theists, leftists, Gandhians and Ambedkarites. The people in the book's photographs raise an interesting question: What is freedom? Almost all of them continued their fight for freedom long after the year 1947. The post-1947 generations need stories of the foot soldiers of Indian independence.
