A mermaid protrudes from the flat, grey sea on a calm day, close to the Caribbean island of Black Conch. She is drawn to David, a fisherman who is humming to himself on his guitar while he waits for a catch. For ages, Aycayia the mermaid has been living by herself in the great ocean. David saves Aycayia after she is caught and carried ashore by American visitors with the intention of returning her to the water. However, it quickly becomes apparent that the mermaid is already changing into a woman. This is the tale of their romance, an island, and the vast ocean.
