Beloved, Toni Morrison's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel from 1987, is in many respects both an iconic piece of African-American literature and a part of the canon of current English literature. This magical realist story, which has been extensively read, studied, critiqued, and analysed, includes many of the themes that Morrison explores throughout her body of work, including slavery, black history, feminism, relationships, particularly those between women, sexuality and gender, and political and racial ideologies. The current collection attempts to analyse these themes while placing them in the context of Morrison's larger body of work, while concentrating on the novel's smaller, more nuanced elements. By sufficiently elaborating on the topics, it hopes to inspire further critical engagement and research.
