Principles of Modern Political Science
Remarkable developments have taken place in the domain of political theory in the present age of liberalisation and globalisation. The concept of the nation-state has undergone a major change on account of the irresistible erosion of sovereignty in the internal and external spheres and the emergence of the model of a transnational state. Different models of state may be seen in the countries of the Third World. It has put a question mark on the future of the nation-state. The basic tenets of liberalism have been challenged by Neo-liberalism and Communitarianism with the result that now it is on the retreat. In the post-World War II period, the New Fabians had revised the tenets of Fabianism, but in the post-Cold War era it has been replaced by the Third Way. The pluralists had attacked the classical theory of sovereignty, but the neo-pluralists have given a new shape to it. The theme of political legitimacy has been revisited. The old concept of citizenship requires to be reinterpreted in the contexts of civic republicanism, multi-culturalism and identity politics. It has happened with other themes as well which may be taken note of in the emergence of new topics like Neo-colonialism, Post-colonialism, Post-communism and the like. The task of a political scientist is to comprehend and critically describe the underlying principles of political behaviour in their empirical as well as normative dimensions. Inter-disciplinary focus has become so popular now that the implications of the themes of various social sciences have penetrated into the domain of each other. The discipline of political science has become a study of 'power' and of 'struggle' for its sake at any level - local, regional, national and international. In the light of these salient features, university courses have been modernised, and the author has done well to cover them in this work so as to adequately meet the requirements of students offering this course at the degree and postgraduate levels and of candidates preparing for competitive examinations.

Theoretical Foundations Of Comparative Politics
The modern study of Comparative Politics emerged in the late nineteenth century, and since then has evolved largely due to the research in US universities. Comparative Politics is one of the three core components of political science, the other two being political theory and international relations. However, it was only in the twentieth century that comparative government and politics emerged as an important sub-field within the discipline of political science. Since then, it has undergone tremendous transformation in terms of its nature and ambit of study.
Theoretical Foundations of Comparative Politics analyses in depth the theories and concepts that form the foundation of comparative politics. Concentrating on the study of this sub-discipline in the context of the developing world, this book:
- Analyses core concepts from a non-Western perspective.
- Explains new modifications to the study of comparative politics, for example, through the theories of Skocpol and Wallerstein.
- Analyses various forms of government—federal system, parliamentary and presidential systems.
- Analyses the notion of the state and its different perspectives.
- Discusses the impact of liberalisation and globalisation on comparative politics.
- Discusses important world events, such as the collapse of communism in the 1990s, a unified Europe and the recent Brexit, and their effect on the discipline.
- Examines new issues of gender and environment, and how they are affecting contemporary comparative politics.
Detailed and filled with recent, relevant examples from world and Indian politics, this book will be invaluable to undergraduate and postgraduate students of political science and comparative politics.

Politics in India
In this pioneering study of India as a vibrant and politically sustainable polity, Rajni Kothari covers considerable basic ground. Politics in India was first published in 1970 and marks a turning point in the evolution of the author’s intellectual contributions. From the theoretical, historical, socio-cultural, and comparative matrices of Indian polity, this book ranges through strategies, concerns, and issues that strengthen and support India’s tried and tested political institutions and the agencies that promote the country’s national integration. Kothari’s superiority as a theorist and teacher is evident in this book. Its detailed analyses and commentary cover existing and emergent paradigms of Indian political life and action. It also deals with the politics of party system and coalitions, social infrastructure and balanced growth options, including India’s challenges and the greater role it envisages in subcontinental and international politics. The concluding chapter on “Future Perspectives” is Kothari’s helpful pointer towards this prospect. In this second edition, the introduction by Prakash Sarangi highlights the significance of book as an important landmark and its relevance in contemporary times.
